Q: How do I get in touch with an HNR staff member?

Q: I am having trouble accessing the HNR forums or a particular part of HNR generally.

A: More than likely your browser is not set to accept cookies or your firewall may have to be configured to “trust” HNR. If you’ve tried this and still can’t access a particular page, or you’re sure it’s a problem on our end, please contact us and provide as many details about the problem as possible >> hnr@hollywoodnorthreport.com

Q: How do I advertise on HNR?

A: For more information on how you can advertise on HNR click here.

Q: How do I complain about a story/feature/interview?

A: We don’t accept complaints, sorry. Gifts – provided they’re not the exploding or toxic kind – are, however, always welcome.

Q: How do I contact so-and-so actor?

A: First off, HNR doesn’t condone stalking of any kind.

Okay, now that that’s out of the way, there are plenty of resources on the web to contact an actor or learn more about them. Your best course of action is to do a Google search to determine if the actor has an official website and go from there (we have conveniently located a Google Search on the bottom of the front page of our site click here to use it). If they are a television performer, you can usually email or write to the studio/network and they will provide you with information on how to submit fan mail.

If that doesn’t float you boat, check with IMDb or TV Tome; those sites have a wealth of information on actors and crew. If the individual is a Canadian, feel free to post a request for info in the HNR forums and chances are you will get a response from someone who can steer you in the right direction.

Q: How do I contact a particular production filming in Canada?

A: Use the Links section of HNR and check with the appropriate local film commission. They may even have a list with phone numbers and addresses of all the productions currently filming in their area, though in some cases – particularly since 9/11 – this information can be kept tightly controlled.

Q: How do I find out where a production is filming on a given day so that I can go and watch?

A: Generally speaking this information is not made available to the public at large. Feel free to check the HNR Forums for updates on location filming. It’s not uncommon for our readers to post daily information about location shoots to which they’ve become privy.

Q: I am going to watch a production filming, what should I expect, and are there any rules or regulations for how to comport oneself?

A: If you’ve been invited by a friend who works on the production, they’ll probably coach you on the “dos and don’ts” of set etiquette. In a nutshell, watching filming is sort of like watching paint dry, except with a lot of yelling. Just remember to be polite and courteous to everyone all the time, and to be quiet as a mouse when the director yells, “Action…” If you remember these two things, you’ll avoid the embarrassment of being tossed off the set by an orangutan named Guido.

Q: How can I get a job in the film industry?

A: Ahhh, the $64 million question! The short answer is that no two people seem to get in the exact same way (it’s kind of a funny business in that regard). It really depends upon what you want to do, your skill set, and how well connected you are. But if you want to start at the ground floor and work your way up, the most common route in is to begin as a P.A. (Production Assistant). The best way to get more information on being a Production Assistant is to contact the DGC (Directors Guild of Canada) BC office at: 604-688-2976 (for Ontario residents, the number is: 416-482-6640). They will lay out the whole P.A. permit/training process for you. You can also contact any number of schools or colleges in Canada that offer a film program and obtain additional information from them (see our Links page for contact info).

Q: I am looking to find out how to get my baby/son/sister/dad/aunt/grandma/etc into television/commercials/films.

A: Another question we’ve been getting a lot lately. Depending upon where you live, we recommend starting with your local film commission, your regional branch of ACTRA, the UBCP (for British Columbia residents), or a talent agency in your area. If the aforementioned can’t help you directly, they’ll certainly know who can.

Q: Does HNR offer sponsorship for events or groups involved in the film & TV industry in Canada?

A: Yes we do! HNR is committed to helping the Canadian film & television industry any way we can so long as it doesn’t involve us getting naked in public (well too naked at least). Please send us an email describing the details of your event and what we can do to help you spread the word.
